Study finds sharp increase in strokes among younger patients
Romantic handholding is commonplace when a couple is on their honeymoon.
But Marie Pienton knew the plea from her husband, Bradley, to grab hold of his hand wasn’t a lovey-dovey gesture when they were five miles into a hike while on their honeymoon.
“I thought it was dehydration,” said Marie, a physical therapist. “He had the classical symptoms of it.”
She now knows the sobering truth: Incidents of stroke increasingly are striking people in their younger years.
The Belmont couple was hiking on South Manitou Island on Aug. 28 when Bradley experienced recurrent bouts of dizziness and vomiting and profuse sweating.
With the help of park rangers, Marie was able to get her husband on a ferry back to Leland and transport him to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, where he was treated for dehydration and released.
But clearly, things still weren’t right.
Bradley remembers his skin feeling numb, as did the right side of his body. The left side of his neck throbbed, and he was unable to see out of the right side of both eyes. Simple tasks became difficult to accomplish.
Alarm bells went off inside Marie’s head.
“I thought, ‘Oh my God, these are signs of a stroke,’” she said.
Bradley, 30, was unperturbed.
“I was just thinking this is a real pain in the ass.”
But the neurologist who diagnosed Bradley says otherwise.
“He’s very fortunate to be alive,” said Dr. Archit Bhatt, stroke director for Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital.
“His (blood) clots didn’t stay in his blood vessel but traveled up to the brain.”
Bradley is in unenviable company.
Strokes are becoming far more common among people his age, according to the first large nationwide study of stroke hospitalizations by age that makes May, National Stroke Awareness Month, all the more relevant.

Clog Arteries in Neck - Why This Should Raise a Red Flag | Free ...
Learning about clogged arteries is important, and knowing the different foods that clog arteries in neck should be something you should research on. In the modern world, where people are always on the go, they have found it to be easier to eat out in fast food restaurants as you could order and pay for your food. But do you know how they cook those foods? Do you know what goes into the food items you order? Sure, it may be easier and it is less of a hassle, but it provides your body with possible dangers.
However, the most common risk factor as to why neck arteries become clogged is age. As we age, the risk for heart attack and stroke increases. The carotid arteries are the main arteries supplying oxygen to the brain. The people who have this condition don’t always develop such symptoms associated with it, most of the time; they don’t feel anything that would alert them of their condition. In fact, the blockage of the arteries could lead to a small and minor brain stroke, which could further lead to debilitating effects.
Blocked carotid arteries occur when the opening of the artery is narrowed because of the accumulation of the plaque. Once the arterial opening is narrowed, it causes the blood to clot and thus, further aggravates the condition. The blockage, which are the plaques that accumulate in the area, prevents the blood, nutrients and the oxygen to flow properly to the brain. This is what could lead to a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke.
When plaques made up of fats, calcium, fibrin and cholesterol clog arteries in neck , there could be possible symptoms that you could experience and manifest. These symptoms will serve as warning signs so you will be able to catch the condition before it further progresses. Sometimes, you could manifest temporary loss of eyesight or your vision or only your vision at night could be affected. A major part of the brain that could be affected by this is the cerebrum. When this part of the brain gets little oxygen, its function becomes impaired and you could feel numb at certain body parts, or worse, you could become paralyzed. Aside from this, you could possibly have difficulty in speaking, and your eyelids would start to droop. There are instances, although very rare, that you could even have seizures. However, the main thing you have to observe is if these symptoms occur in only one side or part of the body.
