Eau Claire store seeks to promote American Indian arts and crafts
Jane Wolf looks to sell more than just a nice piece of jewelry or a pretty artifact at the Silver Feather in downtown Eau Claire.
Embedded in each bracelet and walking stick she sells is a piece of American Indian culture and a tale about an artist, Wolf said.
"It's not just the thing, but it's got a story behind it," Wolf said.
For that reason, Wolf said she studies what goes into making the American Indian jewelry and artifacts she sells, so she can share the knowledge with customers. That way they can appreciate the craftsmanship and culture contained in each piece.
It's something Wolf, 65, of Eau Claire, has been doing for nearly a quarter century, as she finds artists locally and in the American Southwest whose work she admires.
Wolf said she loves the unique-ness that comes from work done by hand.
"I always liked things that were different. I didn't want what anyone else had," she said. "So when I discovered the handmade Indian jewelry, it was a passion."
Wolf's passion sparked when she opened a boutique selling American Indian jewelry in Bloomer in 1984.
She quickly outgrew her store and opened a kiosk in Eau Claire's Oakwood Mall, but the fast-paced atmosphere didn't seem right to her. So in 1987 she opened her current store at 126 S. Barstow St.
"When I opened this place up, I must have thought it was going to make it because I bought the building," Wolf recently said with a laugh.
As important to Wolf's success as her location were the relationships she fostered with artists and vendors.
Her biggest seller by far is jewelry, she said, much of which she buys from the Southwest. For years, Wolf would travel to New Mexico, Arizona and other states to buy pieces to bring back to her store.
In her travels she developed relationships with artists, which in recent years, she said, has allowed her to make fewer trips. That's because artists who know her sometimes send pieces they think she'll like.

American Indian Art – A Gift for Any Occasion | Online Shopping ...
Many individuals spend days, even weeks, searching for the perfect gift for a close friend or relative. Despite spending a large amount of time searching, there are still many individuals who are unable to find the perfect gift. American Indian art is an amazing gift idea for just about any occasion, but many individuals do not even consider it.
It is hard to determine exactly why American Indian art isn’t given as a gift more often. There are many individuals who aren’t even aware of these beautiful items. This is because not all cities and towns in the Untied States have an Indian art store or gift shop. Online shopping and mail-order catalogs have made it possible for just about every individual to purchase American Indian art.
It is often hard to find a gift that is tailored to a specific person. The good news is that there are a wide variety of different American Indian art items. Many individuals associate art with paintings, but there is more to art then just paintings. American Indian art may include, but is not limited to, paintings, pottery, and sculptures.
Special occasions that a gift may be given on include birthdays, anniversaries, the birth of a baby, a new home, and holidays. Every single one of these occasions is the perfect time to give an American Indian art gift. There are no set rules when it comes to giving American Indian art as gift. This means that a gift giver could select whatever gift they feel their friend, relative, or co-worker would want.
One of the most popular occasions that American Indian art is given as a gift is birthdays. When it comes to birthdays, just about any gift can be given. If an individual having a birthday is interested in Indians or horses, a great gift idea would be an American Indian painting. Of course, other gifts can be given, but a painting is an amazing way to show appreciation to a person that you know or love.
A housewarming gift is another way that American Indian art can be given to an individual. One of the first things that a new homeowner does is decorate their home. Almost all American Indian art pieces can be used as home décor. These home décor items may include paintings, sculptures, pottery, and much more. A new homeowner will be very appreciative of American Indian art.
