Pocatello Regional Airport boardings rise by about 1 percent in 2010
POCATELLO — Pocatello Regional Airport Manager David Allen considers it a victory that the facility’s 2010 boardings were up slightly from the previous year.
The airport reported 23,319 total boardings in 2010, up roughly 1 percent from the 23,001 passengers who boarded in 2009.
In 2009, however, the airport benefited from about 1,000 extra boardings during September, when the Idaho Falls Regional Airport was closed for a runway project and routed all of its flights to Pocatello. Furthermore, Allen feared the inconvenience posed by a major terminal renovation project in 2010 would deter many from flying out of Pocatello. Apparently, that didn’t happen.
“It was totally under construction. It was a very big inconvenience,” Allen said. “The men’s restroom was unavailable for several months and the only restroom available for the men was an ADA single-stall bathroom. When you get a flight coming in, every man coming off that flight typically comes to the bathroom. That’s just one example.”
Boarding appears to also be flat early on in 2011. January and February saw about the same number of boardings compared with 2010. Allen said March was up by about 1 percent.
He’s optimistic, however, that a new rates program announced Wednesday by Delta Airlines should spur business at the airport.
Delta is now offering spring travel fares from Pocatello to Salt Lake City starting at $69 each way for travelers who make round-trip purchases.
“That’s a great deal,” Allen said, adding the airport conducted an analysis concluding the round-trip cost of driving to Salt Lake City and parking at the airport averaged $170 for travelers.
In general, Allen said the Pocatello Regional Airport has averaged markups of about $200 on round-trip fares. Sometimes, he said local flights come in cheaper. For example, the March rate for a flight from Pocatello to Paris was $930, compared with a rate of $1,016 out of Salt Lake City.
