We are seeing how owners are becoming a lot more sophisticated in their day-to-day business operations. There is a growing trend – and increased need – for their estimators to become more sophisticated in their understanding of the entire repair process. By doing this, they have a greater understanding of the material they are working on (steel, HSS, UHSS), the processes needed to make these repairs and the training needed for their technicians. But a lot of the changes are economically driven. Shop owners are having to be more data- and performance-driven, and are finding an increased need for standard operating procedures for all of their processes. There is more accountability for everything – and everyone – in their businesses. This is driving them to set new goals for how repairs are performed so that the shop is as efficient as possible, while controlling cost and providing a great customer experience. One thing we see is how shop owners are adopting lean process manufacturing methods to their collision repair jobs. They’re looking at the cycle time from when the car comes in the front door to when it is acceptably delivered to the customer. They are cutting out wasted steps and inefficiency in the process and reducing the time it takes for each step. We have worked closely with our customers to help them streamline their processes and material use. First, they need to look at a “5S” approach for their shop – essentially sort, set in order, shine and sweep, standardize and sustain the process. What we help them do is evaluate their current repair process then provide solutions. It involves finding the right materials for the process and getting the best performance from the materials used. We help instill material tracking, through the use of carts and cabinets, and following the philosophy of a “place for everything, everything in its place and ready to use” rule.
