John Calloway began performing Afro-Latin and jazz music as a teenager in San Francisco's Mission district, a spawning ground for many top West Coast performers of Latin music including Karl Perrazo, Rebeca Mauleon, and John Santos. Calloway lived in New York during the 1980's performing with Manny Oquendo's Libre, Charanga 76, and Oscar Hernandez. Returning to San Francisco, Calloway became a founding member of the Grammy nominated Machete Ensemble, having written and arranged much of their material. Now leading his own group Diaspora, Calloway recently released his second CD, "The Code".
